Remote Desktop MFA account setup

Multi-Factor Authentication for Remote Desktop

To begin using Remote Desktop you will need to setup multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA will use your mobile device as an additional login credential to verify your identity. This will be done using an authentication app on your mobile phone or by a phone call. If you plan to use the authentication app on your mobile device you should follow the instructions below using your mobile device (recommended). If you prefer to receive a phone call to verify identity you may proceed using your computer. To begin we will configure your account with Azure MFA.

  • Go to Microsoft Website https://aka.ms/mfasetup to setup your account:
    • Sign in with your user account.
    • If prompted, choose "Work or school account".
    • Enter your password.
  • Select "Security info"
    • Select "Add method"
    • To use an app on your phone: Select "Authentication app". This will prompt you on your mobile phone to verify your identity.
      • You will need to download the "Microsoft Authenticator app" on your mobile device.
      • Follow the on screen directions to complete the setup.
    • To receive a phone call: Select "Office phone". This will call the specified number and relay a code to you that will need to be entered after signing in.
      • Enter a ten digit telephone number.
      • Follow the on screen instructions to complete the setup.
  • You are able to add both the app and a phone number to your profile. In the case that the app is not working you are able to use a phone call instead.

We will now test your account to verify it is setup properly.

  • Sign in another Microsoft Website at https://portal.office.com
  • After signing in with your user name and password you will be informed to Approve the sign in request. You should receive a notification on your phone to allow sign in. Select accept to log in.
    • You may also select "Sign in another way" to receive a phone call instead of using the authenticator app.
      •
  • You are now ready to use Remote Desktop with MFA.
    • You should have received a Remote Desktop Connection profile from I.T.
    • Open the file and select "Connect"
    • Enter your user name and include @mvcc (Username@mvcc - not @morainevalley.edu)
    • You should now receive a MFA notification on your mobile device. Select "Approve".
    • You will be prompted for a certificate. Select "Yes"
  • You should now have successfully logged into Remote Desktop using MFA. Thanks!
